Tekedra N. Mawakana is the vice president of public policy and government affairs at Waymo — a self-driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. Tekedra joined Waymo with over two decades of experience handling public policy, legal and regulatory issues facing technology companies.
Prior to Waymo, she served as eBay’s vice president of global government relations and public policy. There, she focused on promoting trade and protecting the interests of small businesses globally.
Before that, she served as the vice president, global head and deputy general counsel of public policy for Yahoo, addressing key digital issues including data privacy, intellectual property, human rights and free expression, net neutrality, government surveillance and cybersecurity.
Prior to Yahoo, she was at AOL for over 12 years. There, she formed AOL’s independent (post-Time Warner) public policy organization and served as senior vice president and deputy general counsel. Prior to AOL, she managed a host of e-commerce, IP and M&A matters at Startec Global Communications. She started her career at the Washington, DC-based law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP.
Tekedra has garnered a reputation as a trusted and reliable industry leader. In May 2015, Tekedra was recognized by Washingtonian magazine as a Tech Titan — top 100 tech influencer in DC. In August 2016, she was recognized as a Visionary Leader by ALM and InsideCounsel.
Tekedra received her JD from Columbia University School of Law and her BA from Trinity College.
